FACT FILE

  • Visual effects assistant Mike Kelt was inside the monster costume and he was required to walk backwards on all fours.

  • Kelt often fell into ditches in the costume and was unable to get out!

  • The mouth-piece on the monster costume was later used for the snake creature in Rescue in Series D.

  • This episode saw Nicholas Rocker make his debut as costume designer. Rocker had designed evening dresses for Shirley Bassey so he was ideally suited to design costumes for Servalan!

  • The Harvest of Kairos was originally to have been broadcast as the seventh episode of Series C.

  • The shelter on Kairos was a disused airfield near Bovingdon in Hertfordshire.

  • The scenes set in the shuttle hold were shot at Ealing Film Studios.

  • A sequence of Jarvik finding Carlon’s corpse and avoiding the spider creature was filmed but not used.

  • Studio recording took place from Friday 21 to Sunday 23 December 1979 in TC1.

  • An establishing shot of Space Command HQ was accidentally used instead of Servalan’s starcruiser.

  • This was not a popular episode with the regular cast and was apparently a big factor in Jan Chappell’s decision to leave.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS

“I find Jackie a very easy person to design for. She has a natural ability to wear clothes to their best effect.”

Costume Designer Nicholas Rocker, interviewed by Blake's 7 Monthly in 1981.

“I was sitting on the ground so my arms were its back legs and my legs were its front legs, and there were two false ones in the middle, and this huge body behind. It wasn’t the most comfortable position to be in.”

Mike Kelt, Visual Effects Assistant, interviewed in 1997.
